Another foray to a nusery at lunch today. I noticed a large supply of Lady In Red salvia. Just as I convinced myself that I don't need more Lady In Red, the eye catches something odd. Some of those plants aren't LIR. They are Coral Nymph salvia. Very similar except with a light pastel coral bloom. It was my duty to try a few. No Latin name.

Anyone ever hear of this plant? Do you think I should ask the Director of Security to lock me up over lunch hour?

I know exactly what you mean HS. I asked my friend on Sunday not to let me go to any more places that sell plants or flowers. I never need any more but I always buy more. Its definitely an addiction!

Harry your Coral Nymph like Lady in Red is also a Salvia coccinea. I started growing them last year. Mine got about 4 ft. tall. Yes my hummers used them every bit as much as they used Lady in Red.

I ended up buying a little azalea yesterday when I went to WalMart. They were in 4 inch deep root pots for $1.87. I came home and repotted it into a 10-12 inch pot and the buds are just starting to open. A nice addition to my front shady bed and for $1.87 I couldn't afford to pass it up.

Oh I also ended up order another Black & Blue from Rich so it will be arriving next week with my Raspebbry Truffles and I have no idea where i will put them as my beds are already filling up with reseeders, returning perennials and wintersown seedlings.

Sounds like Coral Nymph was a great buy. It's our duty to provide a BALANCED meal for our hummingbirds right? That's what I try to do. ahem
Penny - Wow! That's an amazing deal on the azalea.
I have some reseeders too. I was going to go back and buy more Lady in Red but I noticed I have Yvonne's Salvia seedlings coming up and also some Forest Fire seedlings. I think by the time everything fills out, my dh is going to think I overdid it a bit.
My salvia greggii 'Cherry Queen' made it through its second winter and has been blooming for quite a while. I think I might owe it to my hummingbirds to add some other greggii cultivars.

Hey there Harry, you are in good company.......that's for sure! I went to a local garden center to purchase a lilac bush and I ended up buying a new "color" fuschia........it's a beautiful deep magenta red. The bottom half of the flower looks like a deep velvet.....just had to have it of course! LOL Penny what is raspberry truffle???? I would love try it in my garden. I haven't seen any posting from MimiD???

I actually passed up a salvia greggii the other day. Now I'm regretting it. I didn't know where to put it but I found a spot.

I ordered the Raspberry Truffle salvia from Rich Dufresne's website A World of Salvias

I believe he got the seed to trial from Helena in Miss. as the picture is of one of her plants. I will be getting mine along with another Black and Blue if he still has some left next week.

I also sent you an email about mimidi, Sarah, Stan and all.

Uh Oh Penny, credit for S. gesneraeflora mex. 'Paspberry Truffle' goes to Andy Maycen. I did get my plant from Richard though. It's gorgeoous and still blooming it's heart out. Helena

OH I thought it was your plant Helena. Well thanks for setting me straight. I can't wait to get them but lord only knows where I will put them. I have got to stop looking at plants b/c i want everyone that I see!

My B&B and Raspberry Truffles arrived yesterday along with my first hummer! I have already planted out the B&B since I already had its spotted ready to go. the other two will be going in the ground early this morning before the sun moves into that area.

Two flower stems on my 'Paspberry Truffles' has gotten so heavy that they broke (maybe from rain and orioles landing on them). I saw a few seeds but don't know if they will be good. The plant is really easy root from cuttings.

Helena thanks for that info. You know me, I will definitely be taking cuttings of my plants in late summer to overwinter for next year.

Helena, I am putting them on the west side of my house in the center of my Salvia bed so they will be taking center stage with my Purple Majesty. I am really looking forward to seeing those gorgeous blooms.

I thought I read that Rasberry Truffles was a LATE blooming Salvia. I love the color but was going to pass. I was thinking since I'm in zone 6 it wouldn't bloom very long. I'm changing my mind since Helena called it LONG blooming. Tell me more though. When did yours start blooming? How long have you had it? There isn't very much info on the internet about it. I guess it's too new.

Penny, that sounds great. It will be a show stopper!
Christie, I ordered my plants from Richard Jan. 7 and he always sends them within days (we had a wild winter). I kept most of my salvias in my makeshift GH with heat lamp on real cold days. 'Raspberry Truffle' started blooming around mid April and is still making more blooms. Maybe when it's planted in the ground it'll take longer to break dormancy and bloom later. If you can overwinter cuttings inside, it's worthy plant.
