Are you also getting cold, wet windy weather up there? If so that may be your answer. Mine are doing the same thing and it is very cold, very windy and raining for days on end. I have heard the same thing from other hummer folks. My theory is that they are trying to stay close to a food source and conserve energy as much as possible without going into torpor. I think that once it warms up you will see a behavior change.

Yes, the weather has been cooler, windier and wetter than normal. Your theory makes sense, Penny. I discovered that it was a male, which surprised me, because I have observed that the males are a lot less trusting than the females and he was definitely aware of me staring at him. He stayed for over an hour, left for a little bit and came back and stayed for another hour. It was pretty cool. Thanks!

You are welcome. My males are generally much less trusting also and will flit off at the slightest movenment but they have been coming to the fveeders even when I ma out there and perching. They are taking advantage of their food sources right now as much as they can. Hopefully in a few days we will be past all this wintery type weather and things will be back to normal.
