We have the red Columbine growing. They flock it like crazy. When I start seeing the birds go after the Columbine, that is my sign to hang out my feeders. Columbine also comes back every year and is very good during hot dry summers. It only blooms during the spring, so be sure and hang feeders when it's blooming so the birds will already have something when they stop flowering. Good luck!

I can't use the columbine as a determining factor for hanging out the feeders as the hummers are already here before the columbine blooms in some years. I go more by the Migration Map to determinte the best time to hang feeders in my area. That being said the Native eastern columbine is a good spring bloomer as are both Silene regia and Silene virginica. Coral Bells is another hardy spring bloomer that the hummers will use. If the honeysuckles are in bloom now in GA. then that may be where they are all flocking. Once that slows down they will expand their territories to more garden flowers.
