Cardinal Flower Problems

about a month ago I planted a cardinal fower in my bird garden it was doing fine, until it started to get spots on it and a week later the roots began to rot and die. So I did some research and it said roots rot because of over watering, but cardinal flowers live in wet climates and bogged soils so I was confused. So a week later a bought a new one and plaanted it and its begining to get spots, what should I do.

Which Cardinal flower? Lobelia siphilitica likes it drier
Lobelia cardinalis likes moist well drained soils.Lobelia
laxiflora likes it really dry.

I'd like to bump this because I'm interested in the answer as well. I assume it's lobelia cardinalis the OP is speaking of, which should do fine in boggy conditions, I've read. Anyone have some experience to share?

My guess is too much sun. Piliar, what sun does it get?
