You can place the feeder almost anywhere you wish.

Sue and I visited a wonderful B & B in the UP of Michigan and they had hummingbird feeders hung along the east side of their long porch.

Last year, I hung our first feeder on a tree branch outside of one of our family room windows.

This year, I made the "mistake" of hanging our feeders underneath several branches of a tree located on the west side of the house. The "mistake" came from the fact that I discovered that a few raccoons in the area had a fondness for nectar. Didn't know that then, but I do know it now.

Presently, I employed a second Wild Birds Unlimited Advanced Pole System and place it between two trees in the south side of our yard. We can see the feeders from the house, but we will enjoy them anytime we're out in the patio. Hung under these conditions, the racoons won't be able to "access" the hummingbird and oriole feeders and "hog" all of the nectar.

As an added "attraction", I have also hung a large hanging basket of Fuchsia and have planted several flowers which attract the hummers around the patio area.

In addition to this source, you might also wish to take advantage of the superb "Search" tool at the "PlantFinder" section of the Missouri Botanical Garden. One you arrive at the site, scroll down a bit and you will note that you can check "attracts hummingbirds", check it and then key in any other attributes you desire and you'll find an excellent array of plant material to select.

Thanks for the info, my back yard is surrounded on 2 sides by lilac bushes and I hung it on them on a low branch.

I hang all my feeders so that I can easily reach them to take them down to clean and refill on a regular basis. If they are easily accessible for me then they are cleaned and refilled every 2 to 3 days to keep mold from growing or to keep the nectar from fermenting.
