If you have only 1-3 birds, then one very aggressive bird can keep the others from the feeders. I had that problem at my last home and just added more feeders. I was going to yank feeders when I got a few more birds, but I just kept getting more & more birds. I would think most hummers are settled in by now. You might try more red & maybe another feeder next year. Right now, I have 10 feeders up and I might have 1 bird or 25 birds. Most of the day I have 4 birds to 10 birds. Got to go make nectar shortly. Those 3 birds should show up next year and bring their buddies.

I'm purchasing more feeders this weekend to see if I can attract the females and babies soon...I read the ones I'm seeing right now are males because the females are nesting, whatnot, with the babies.

I do cook up new batches of nectar (1 sugar:4 water) every 3 days, so I wonder if I need to make fresher nectar like every other day or so....hmmmmm, anyone know if I should do this to attract more hummers?

vuwugarden, In your TX heat, 3 days could be a bit long. Try mixing in smaller batches, daily if you have the time. The 1:4 ratio works at the tablespoon level just as well.

You should be seeing females also, even during nesting. Not only do they need the nectar, but they regurgitate nectar and insects for their babies. YUMMY!!

As far as I can tell there are just one family of Black-chinned hummingbirds in my neighborhood in this part of Texas. In past years I had one pair/family very close by, probably on my property. This year they seem to be nesting a bit further away, but do show up, just were coming less often until the past week. The young ones (babies, from this year's nesting) are showing up in my yard just within the last week, so I'm seeing more hummers. I'm west of San Antonio. The young ones have to get to a certain age to go zooming about, so you'll probably see them soon. The mother hummers tend to stay fairly close to the nest, relying more on insects, during the time the babies are small and defenseless, then she'll go out more as they get able to fly a bit. If the nests are not very close to you, you wouldn't see her much during that time when she is staying close to the nest.
