Susan, here in Florida I've seen them on Zinnias and Mexican Sunflowers. I've heard they like Petunias. Other than that I don't do a lot of annuals, mostly perennials. Of course many things that are perennials here are annuals elsewhere!

For annuals these would be my top pics. The Salvia greggiis and Cuphea ignea 'David Verity and even the Texas sage might be perennial for you in S. Cal.

Four O'clocks (Mirabilis jalapa) in the hot pink or red

Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans) - a tender perennial for some and perhaps annual for those less than USDA Zone 8.

I have seen them at my Million Bells, which are mini petunias I believe

I'd like to add pentas, which are always a hummer favorite in my garden. As a bonus, butterflies also love them, but not bees. And they "deadhead" themselves like petunias, although they can use a little cleaning up from time to time.

By the way, I have wave petunias in a container this year and the hummers have ignored them. =(

Well, right after I wrote the above post I looked out and there's a bumblebee on my pentas. So never mind abut that comment!...butterflies do still love them, though.

I too have Bumble bees on my Salvia. They land on the blooms and stick their hind legs inside to get the pollen. But that doesn't work on Honey Suckle, the blooms are to long and deep. But oh they want it and try! Ha!

The hummers and I ignore them, but I know very well what that sting feels like. I just hate that they take all the goodies out of the blooms that the hummers need.

I have 2 fushia hanging baskets on my front porch, unfortunatley I scared a hummingbird away accidentally, but I know they love fushia......still awaiting the hummingbirds return it was lovely!!

I think the Salvia guaranatica (Black and Blue) is tops for my Hummers. They also like Pentas, Lantana and Verbena. They've been ignoring the Calibroch??? Million Bells :(
