I had to take down my feeder earlier this year as we were not going to be at our house for a while (3 months) - when ever we came by the house to visit, I always saw my hummers at the salvia in the front - but now that we are back I hardly see them - last year they were there constantly. I got a new feeder for the backyard, mainly because I was getting a lot of ants, so I got one of those saucer feeders with the built in ant moat and it's been a week now but no one is using my feeder. I just saw one guy fly upto the feeder, hover for a bit and then fly off! what's going on? are they rejecting my new feeder? they are still coming to the feeder at the front of the house - though not as often as they used to - but they are coming - that feeder is the old one I had at the back - I don't get any ants on the front porch so I moved it there - the one I had for that spot broke. What do I do? should I go back to something like I had before? also I was wondering, are their tongues long enough to reach into the saucer? seems like really a far way for them to reach.

ps. I did get an ant moat that goes on the regular feeders, so if I have to switch I can use it - but I got some lovely hummingbird plants right where I have that feeder at the back and the moat would be useless unless I get a short feeder - cos the ant's could crawl up the plants and get to the feeder - I don't want to cut the plant down cos it's covered in flowers and buds right now (can't remember what it's called - the nursery sold it as a hummingbird flower and they love it)
