re Pineapple Sage

It is almost time for us to all start wringing our hands about why our Pineapple Sages aren't blooming, and the hummers are leaving - these plants are light sensitive like Chrysanthymums - and why are there lots of those plants offered now when they do not bloom until fall? They have been forced by preventing light to hit them -

I propose that those who wish their plants to bloom should start shortening their exposure to light. Obviously that would be a bit difficult with a plant that is 4 feet by 4 feet - but if you have a cutting, you could pop a black plastic bag over it about four o'clock in the afternoon, and take it back off the next morning - or if you want to put some stakes around your plant, and cover it each evening, that is what they do with Poinsettias for Christmas - anyone in Florida who has them growing in their yard will tell you that they do not bloom in December - my pineapple sages bloom in time for the migration, because I am in North Carolina - in the mountains - but those in the north do not have the time frame that we do.

Just a thought.

You could always buy the smaller version that blooms in the summer The funny thing is mine bloomed in May because it was so rainy and cold! Sarah

My poor dh is trying to prune mine back cuz they got so big while we were gone this past week...told him I'd prune him if he tries! The plants that got water everyday from the sprinkler/dripper system he installed went crazy and we now have a jungle!!! I can't wait til they bloom. If they get blooms on all the branches, I'll have tons! I'm sure it won't be in time for the hummer babies so I hope butterfly's like them too.

Mine is still about 18 inches tall and about the same in width. The one I had last year was over 4ft. tall by this time and it was in a container. This year I have it inground.

It's funny you should say that, I asked that same question just 2 days ago here, I think it's now on page two or three, but mine are tall and healthy with no blooms and I was wondering what was going on.

Wouldn't it still be early enough to cut the sage back if it is getting out of hand? Since bloom time is still a couple of months away, the plant would have time to send a bunch more side shoots.
