Those hummer wannabes!

Frank posted a pic of a house finch on one of his feeders recently, and I've noticed them doing that too, although I've yet to get a picture. They are much more skittish about posing than hummers are! I've seen them at the bottle type feeder as well as the oasis type feeder (it's a Perky Pet and the flowers have come off so the holes are larger and I guess large enough for them to drink out of). But the oddest thing was what I witnessed today. A hummer was feasting on the Lady in Red Salvia on one side of the plant, and a house finch was on the other EATING THE BLOOMS OFF THE PLANT! Now, wait a minute, that's not fair!! What am I supposed to do about that??

I had a squirrel climb up a planter with a garden meister and pluck the whole bunch of flowers and eat them.

Finches eat many different plants, lately they've been eating Autumn Sedum. I think the solution to this problem is have several of the same plants so damage is not too bad. They tend to nibble a little here and luckily the finches don't eat the entire plant. VAL

This red-bellied has become a regular (along with all the house finches).

Wow, that's a new one on me! Does he tip it and get nectar out? I've a mature and a juvie red-bellied WP that visit my yard on a regular basis...but they have yet to try the hummer feeders!

I don't know how much nectar he actually gets from that feeder, but when he lands on the Four Fountains he definitely gets some.

Jane, I just took a look at some of your videos. Very nice! The audio really adds a pleasant touch.

BTW, I think it was you who mentioned crocosmia on another forum last month. I dug up and tossed a bunch of mine, but of course I didn't get all the bulbs and they're coming back. If you'd like some drop me a line. I live near LSU.
