These were both taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II using a Canon 500mm f/4 lens, both handheld and at close range and with a lot of luck. I was actually focusing on the older bird when the juvenile showed up and I kept shooting.

My gear may be expensive but I too am an amateur. This year is my first shooting hummers. I usually shoot bluebirds. Thanks for the interest.

Dave - excellent pic as usual!!! And you're right that the juvies are giving the mature males a run.

Harry - I noticed the boys seem to be out and about more in the early mornings and late evenings. That's usually when I can see my regular male, particularly now that the juvies have taken over. In the past couple weeks, he has taken to perching a bit closer to the feeder. LOL

Wow, Dave! Great pics, man. I have a lot of hummers and take a lot of pictures (digital) but have a lot to learn. I will be posting some pics over the next few days (modem/ lightning) I should be up by tomorrow night.Been striving lately to not have a feeder in the shot. If I get a good shot, I consider it only a gift from above, as even digital the time from focus to shutter is hard to time right.

I know what you mean. I usually shoot bluebirds and hummers are much tougher. My camera has almost no delay between the trigger and the shutter and focuses very fast too and I still get a lot of throw aways. If I try manual focus it seems they always go a different way than where I was set up so I stay with auto focus and it's mostly luck when I catch one in flight, and really luck when I get two fighting. Usually it happens when I am focusing on one and he is attacked while I am zeroed in on him.
