Ipomoea coccinea-red morning glory

Back in the spring, I planted Red morning glory seeds at my Mom's place in north-central NJ. They germinated and grew, are vining around everything. There are lots of small buds but very few flowers. She wanted them for the hummers but I'm beginning to think they are not going to bloom in time to even catch the migration.

What's the normal bloom time for this flower?

It should be blooming now. In general, if a plant doesn't get enough sun, or gets too much fertilizer high in Nitrogen, it won't bloom. Try feeding it with a flower food high in Phosphate, such as Miracle-Gro Bloom Booster (10-52-10).

I grew the red morning glories this year also and had the same problem. They grew like crazy and then just sat there all green and lovely with no blooms. They are finally blooming now. Mine are in full sun the whole day so I don't know why they took so long. I am thinking they got a slow start because of a cool damp Spring and maybe they just take a long time. I was kind of disappointed though.

Thanks for the responses. Mine started to bloom shortly after my post, but the hummers don't seem to be interested. They much prefer the cardinal flower and jewelweed.

My reseeders have been blooming for a few weeks already. I've been trying to rid my beds of this one for a few years now, but I just gave up, mainly because my hummers love it. Mine is "Orange Noah".

The other morning a Hummingbird was flitting around a Heavenly Blue morning glory while I was taking off the spent blooms from the day before to minimize reseeding on tiny but valuable full sun location. Hummer flitted and promptly left. Don't know if it was me or the color he didn't like...LOL. When I wear a red tee shirt I get Hummer buzzed all day when I'm outside! I've read they're only attracted to the red morning glory. I ordered seeds for Scarlet Runner Bean which I've also read they're attracted to for nectar. Any experience with that?

My Morning Glory wasn't blooming either and, again, I read on some thread that someone gave it a shot of phosphate so I went and bought a BAG of it. Fed it a bit, lightly watered it in and in a couple days it started it's blooming madness. I have not a clue if it was the phosphate or it was just the normal time it would have bloomed anyway.

Now I have a bag of phosphate for any other non-blooming plant suspects...LOL.

I have to stop trying everything I read about or I'm going to either go crazy, broke or a combination of the two.
