I have a hummer feeder outside my dining room window so I can view it from several rooms. Yesterday, in anticipation of getting them fattened up for their trip to Mexico, I put out more concentrated nectar and there was a lot of activity after I put the feeder back up.

Yesterday as I was passing through, I saw two hummers on the same perch, or at least that's what I thought. I stopped and watched and it sure looked like they were mating but that doesn't make any sense. I'm in the southeast where the hummers leave later than some areas but it wouldn't make sense for them to have another brood at this time...

...or would it? Maybe that's not what I saw. Could they have been fighting for territory? I have to admit that I was so very stunned to see them together I didn't notice the sexes, silly me :(

I checked hummingbird.net and I couldn't find any info on the number of broods, etc. Does anyone have any links to such info? Any pics anywhere showing how they mate?
