butterfly ginger

I smelled the flowers of butterfly ginger at HD today and loved the fragrance. Can anyone tell me about how the plant performs? What you like and/or dislike about it? I love sweet, fragrant plants.

I love it as well as other gingers. The white butterfly needs about 4 hours of morning sun to flower well. :o) It does very well for me here in PSL. Even if we do get a frost the roots don't die and it comes back.

Love butterfly ginger and there are many different varities besides the white. Love the one called Elizabeth. Yes they do like at least 4 hours of sun and they do not like to be too dry. I have a friend that has them growing near their natural pond.

I am not sure which one Elizabeth is, but I have a yellow one that gets about 6' tall and smells wonderful. :o)

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about a spot on the southeast side of our house. There is a place where the air conditioner condensation water drains (but we don't use the air much in the winter). I wonder how one would do there? It would get sun until midday--not sure if that would be enough.

When I lived in Georgia I grew it in the air conditioner drain field. It also got the overflow water from the front yard. It grew like crazy even during the drought when the condensation evaporated before it hit the ground. It bloomed in the fall, froze back and came back in the spring. It got very invasive after a few years but it should be easy to dig up out of the sand. I've planted it here too.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm putting it on my list of plants to buy. I'm trying to buy just a couple plants at a time so I don't get overwhelmed. I should have a planting plan, but while I know plants I like and want to own, I have no skill at putting them together in an artistic landscape. I'm a 'one-of-this and one-of-that' kind of gardener :(

I know that both Lowes and Home Depot sell the "bulbs" for at least the white in the spring. Elizabeth is a pink. There are alot of varities. Also have one the I call light orange color that is a NOID.

That's good to know and very helpful! If I don't get around to purchasing a plant, I'll look for bulbs in the spring.

I have some of the yellow flowered ones with variegated leaves. My wife got it from a nursery where it was being grown as a pond plant. One winter I dug it up and kept it in a bucket of water in my greenhouse. It liked that. It doesn't like afternoon sun in the summer. Me neither. I was forced to dig it up in Oct (tree removal) and it has not been happy in pots since then, so back to the bucket.
