Gale Force Winds

On Saturday Hurricane Bill is supposed to pass by the Jersey coast and it might produce gale force winds, 32-63 mph. What do hummingbirds do in these conditions? Do they remain in a torpor, or do they rely more heavily on feeders to survive the wind and cold? I don't want to take down the feeders if they need it, nor do I want to leave them up needlessly.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Ken, I wouldn't think you'd need to take down your feeders. Our area suffered so much damage during Katrina in Aug. '05. My feeders were up and I swear, while trees were snapping and falling all around us, the hummers were still present and after the worst of the winds began to subside they were in a frenzy at the feeders! How in the world they survived, I've no idea!

Hope the weather in your area doesn't get too bad!

On very windy days I would think nectar would slosh out of the ports and have a chance to draw bees. But if you have suction cup feeders they would be a hummers best bet on such a day , but at present I only have one of those. On certain windy days I have watched hummers sit on my pp209 feeders and ride and feed.
