Mango tree owners getting nervous ?

Here in Englewood, just below Venice, we had our coldest night of this winter last night and early this morning. I still have my four 3, 4 yr old trees that have somehow managed to survive. Luckily I seem to have developed a sixth sense when cold is threatening these still tender trees. (Hard to say when I look out at my 14 ft high Valencia Pride ).
Anyhow, yesterday I decided to replace the old string of fifteen C7 Christmas bulbs on my Nam Doc Mai with a new twenty-nine bulb string of colored C9's,..on sale at Wally's. Good timing, as I instinctively awoke at 06:50 AM and scurried to check the outside thermometer. It read 37 degrees,..so am sure my trees will be fine with the whole yard ablaze all night, but a lesson learned. The TV weather guy only predicted a low of 40 - 42 deg. So now will have my old towels and teflon tie wraps handy as well, to wrap around the trunks if the " prediction " goes under 38 degrees, which could easily mean 33 or 32 here !
The coming season looks promising,..so have my new pellet gun ready and starting in March will assume my Elmer Fudd persona and be on the lookout for them " Wascilly Wabbits " or whatever else threatens my upcoming harvest !
C'mon winter & spring, I am ready ! LOL

Best of luck! I hope this is as cold as it will get. I'm amazed you were much colder than we were in Northern Tampa Bay. I just started a Mango this summer.

I have a Nam Doc Mai mango tree. When we first planted it 3 summers ago it had a bloom on it. The planting shock it and the bloom never produced. We ve gone though a couple of winters where the cold burnt the tree and I had to cut it back both times. Ive have never seen a bloom since the 1st planting. Whats up?

The mangoes like to flower in winter season, after it cools down a bit. The frost may be killing the blooms off. They're blooming very early down in Miami according to my tropical fruit friends.

Both my large mango trees were blooming when I left home mid December. This happens every year and many times they get frozen and miss a crop. Sometimes they bloom after frost is done, but seldom get a large crop when that happens. I live SW of Ft Pierce or W of Port St Lucie. Am about 1/2 way between N tip of Lake O and the ocean, so we get frost many times when my friends a few miles east do not get it.

chandler315, if your are cutting back cold damage, you might be cutting off anything that might be getting ready to bloom.

My NDM is not flowering or showing buds yet (just starting to show the start of new growth coming out), same with my PPK, but my Southern Blush is flowering now (Jan 02), my Coconut Creams and Lemon Zest have buds on them, my Mallika and Kent are about ready to flush (and I am expecting buds with it) soon.

When I planted the Kent, it pretty much just sat there for about two years and hardly did anything, one small growth flush, no flowers. It seems to have finally started taking off this past summer.
