Ya know, I feel like the richest person on earth when I'm sitting out in my back yd. watching the birds and the bees being birds and bees!!! Can't think of a thing I'd rather be doing or anything I'd rather spend my money on than making it better for my special friends! So glad y'all are here to share it all with too!

It was a sight to behold. I have never seen 3 perch anywhere close to one another before. I am lucky if one lets another in the yard at the same time.

If you had looked very carefully you'd have seen they were confering over tiny road maps. 'Now where is Mimi's house on the map?' They may also be group of immature females asking each other directions, something science have has proved males won't do. Then again it may have been a hummingbird bon voyage party - were there chickadees nearby wishing the pesky critters good riddance.

I agree, and particularly this morning after looking at all of the news footage of what people are going through, I am counting my blessings and feeling appreciative of everything from the basic necessities of life to the wonderful birds who grace us with their presence.

I was thinking the same thing this morning as the rain and wind was pelting down. I was envisioning the masses of people from all walks of life dredging through all the debris and destruction that they are facing. I refilled my feeders thinking of all our little feathered and furry friends that have had to find shelter. We tend to take so much for granted until a catastrophe like this takes place and then we realize just how precious our very existance is.

Penny what a great experience. You can tell them I have plenty of flowers and my feeders are full so they will find plenty of food here. Don't know what they will find further west though.

Yesterday AM, I had a very long visit by a very brave female. She fed from almost every plant in my garden, on the patio and also a feeder. Leisurely, she went from flower to flower. When she got to the B&B, which was only about 1 foot from me, she hovered, looking at me. I got the feeling she really wanted to get closer. Then I realized I was wearing bright pink shorts! I held my breath actually hoping she wouldn't come any closer. I don't think I could sit still for THAT close of an encounter. LOL!!!

That's wonderful Penny!! it was a strange day today weatherwise. One minute dark rain clouds and windy next minute the sun was out then windy now rainy. And it seemed to bring all the hummers out fighting like crazy and there's still an adult male here. August 31st I've never seen an adult male this late and I saw him about a half hour ago. Sarah

Penny, Good for you , that would have made an interesting picture. I also agree, that we are blessed to still have all of our possessions, while others have lost family and everything they own. I am glad I'm able to continue to feed the hummers and some of the other birds that frequent my garden, along with several chipmonks!

Sarah: I also still have an adult male...I thought he was gone , but have seen him several times in the last few days.
I sit outside watching all of the hummers frequently now. In a few weeks I'm going to NC for 5 1/2 weeks and will miss them so much. I will, however, be filling my time with our three young grandchildren and their (soon-to-be)baby brother. My DH even said he'd maintain the feeders for me (he watches the hummers every morning), even though THey will most likely be gone when I return in early Nov.Verna

That's great Verna how exciting for you! Maybe you will see some down there too. Maybe I'm mistaken but it does seem late for the adult males to still be her in Pa I must remember to write it down for next year's comparison. Sarah

Penny I'm so glad to hear of the activity in your yard! I suppose it was just a matter of time that all the hummers converged on your yard at once.Perhaps the rain and winds coupled with the migration triggered so many around your area and since you have a well-prepared yard they decided to stay for a while.

Penny - Do you remember something Standard said about "a river of hummingbirds flowing through your yard?" It was from a thread quite a few weeks ago. I have never forgotten it and I didn't believe it but if you really sit and watch all day, I think I lost count at over 25 bird sightings the other day. That's why I appreciate the cooler temps because otherwise it is too hot to sit outside. Happy Humming! Ruth

Oh boy the current activity is sure making up for the late spring arrival and the all too infrequent sitings. Yesterday I thought I was in the middle of a hummer war zone and I do mean a war zone. Three of them were really doing battle with me right in the middle of them. They were flying straight up over my head beak to beak and then diving and going after one another with me in the middle. Every now and again things would settle down a bit and I would go inside to get ready for dinner. When I went back outside it all started again. My Lil' Bit has gotten to where she perches on the dog run line 2 ft. from the back door since Big Mamma has taken over her perch on the clothesline. She flies over to the line from her sheltered area as soon as I walk out the door. During the scrabbling yesterday she kept circling around me as though she wanted me to protect her. I actually think if I had held something out in my hand she may have perched. I still have at least the same four or five...adult female,Big Mamma, my two juvie females,Lil Bit and Miss Tish, and the adult male, Pretty Boy. These are the ones that I see and feel sure that I recognize on a daily basis. There is another juvie that I think may be a male but I don't see him all the time. The adult male stays more to himself and spends his time at the feeders and in the jewelweed. The females are the ones that are spending the day and all their energy chasing one another around the yard.
