treebabies, yes, I have two hummers duking it out over the feeders in the back yard this year. Of course it seemed like they would never arrive, and I've never had more than one at a time, but this year I have two!

The Wild Bird store near me said there are plenty of sightings this year. I also know a friend of mine in Olathe has them...

Do you have any websites specific to Kansas hummers or Kansas birds in general? I have found my local resources for here in St. Louis but I may soon have to start all over again! âº

I live in Western Johnson county; which is not quite in the 'burbs yet. I've been having a great hummingbird year. Over the last 10 days or so, I have at least a half dozen hummingbirds in my yard at any given time. I think there are even more than that, but I have feeders in front and back yards and it's a little hard to tell how many some times. I added a third feeder last week to keep up with the demand. It seems one bird will "claim" each feeder and "guards" it, so I have been adding more to accomdate everyone. I have seen several male and female Ruby-throats and another kind which is black and gray (Rufuos perhaps?). I put my first feeder out in mid-April and added a second one in late May. Until the recent upswing, I had consistently had 2-3 hummers visiting daily. I've been at this house 3 years and more hummers stop by every year. I also have lots of flowers in the yard but they seem to prefer the feeders.

Thanks, that's very encouraging! I've just started feeding this year and have become addicted and it's good to know I can feed my habit if we move! âº

Treebabies

There are a lot of hummingbirds that pass thru Johnson Co and some that nest. We've been feeding them for the past 17 years here. The only problem that I would see is if you move to one of those new subdivisions where they have leveled every thing.
