I was just wondering what you guys thought of the the perodical Fraterna. I've read various non flatering things and then there is Burton's critue. (I hope I never get on that woman's bad side.) Is it worth joining?
In my opinion Fraterna is not worth subscribing to. The information in the journal is very often flawed and otherwise easily obtained for free online. I was very disappointed and would never concider subscribing again. If you are at all serious about Hoyas the mistakes are obvious, less serious and you risk being misinformed. One posative note is that new species are sometimes described/published in the journal. This gives you a heads up on these new species publications but often times they are not published properly and therefore seen as invalid by taxonomists. It's a tough call but I believe money is best spent elsewhere.
I would however reccomend going to Apodagis and finding the STEMMA Journal copies in PDF format at the bottom of the Hoya page. The Swedish Hoya Society is also now publishing in English.
Thanks Mike. I've down loaded the Stemma files. Too bad it no longer publishes. They are great. I thought the Swedish Hoya Society didn't have enough English interest to continue with the English edition. Randy
I recently joined the Swedish Hoya Society and they've sent me all the journals they published in English (three so far). As far as I know, the Hoya Telegraph will continue in English. It's a small, beautiful journal and I highly recommend it.
Thanks to Hoya Telegraph, I won't rest till I have H. ilagiorum (front cover of No. 2 in the English series).
