Linda I can relate to everything you posted as if I had posted it myself. I had the same experiences earlier in the week and it was great watching them chasing each other all over the yard and then around the house. I also had one of my hummers taking a bath on the leaves of the jewelweed. She was really enjoying herself quite a bit.

that's excellent, linda. I know you waited a long time this year. activity really is cranking up, sarah. I saw 5 different birds almost simultaneously last saturday. times 5? wow.
I've been thinking about what bob sargent said here last spring. during southbound M-word, sorry, there is "literally a river of hummingbirds flowing past your home, and your feeder is sampling daily from it."
he said that he has banded at homes where the residents claim to have 2 or 3 or 4 birds. he will go there and indeed band 3 or 4 birds. he goes to the same house 2 or 3 days in a row, and bands birds each day, *but not the same ones!*
I keep thinking about that image of a river of hummingbirds. very poetic.

Linda - You can believe Sarah, you and Penny probably did see 16 or 20. We are seeing increased numbers here on the West Coast too, groups of 5 or 6 at one time, a couple of times a day instead of the singles. I shudder to think it will all end soon. A river of hummingbirds, that is music to my ears.

I did count 7 visits in a 30 minute period this morning between 6:30 and 7:00 but I know that at least one of those visitors was going to several feeders. I did have 2 hummers on two different feeders at the same time. It was quite funny waiting for them to discouver one another. The two feeders were on opposite sides of the same tree. One did finally notice the other and the chase was on.

Friday was the first day that I have seen a hummer chase all summer long. I have seen a male and a female sporadically all summer, but usually the male is in the front yard and the female in the back, and they never seemed to interact. Yesterday I witnessed several chases and even heard them in the trees. What sweet music it was!

There are so many and Penny has at least 28 birdlegs and oubliette and mimidi you guys have a ton too. Maybe the ones you saw in orange beach are in the yucatan penisula by now. Sarah

We had a refreshing summer thunderstorm this evening. The HBs loved it!! They were zipping and flying around like crazy. Every few minutes, one would land on the feeder. Between drinks of nectar, she would hold her head back and just let the raindrops hit her in the face. It was so cute. My 8 year-old grandson got startled when 2 zipped past his head.
