I only have one hummer (dont know what kind all I know is the back looks shiny greenish color and the rest looks grey). Anyway it started coming last summer, came back with a vengeance this summer, after my red monarda. Odd thing #1 last night after checking out the red monarda (and ignoring the purple ones next to it) the bird went to my cardinal flower (not on the usual lists but it is red). Then it proceeded to check out the partially opened blooms on a rose of sharon (pink color). It appeared to be poking into the partially opened blooms.

The second and odder thing, twice I have observed it hanging around a small spruce tree in my front yard (well away from the usual flowers it hangs around). It throughly checks the spruce tree out and appears to be trying to get nectar from it like a flower.

Has anyone seen them go after rose of sharon blooms?

any idea why it hangs around my spruce tree?
