Assuming my hatch year hummer stays here for awhile, say through mid Sept., will I be able to see if it's male or female?

Today is the ninth day since I first saw it, and what a great day it was. Now my little one thinks he owns the Salvia B&B. He chases all the bees off the blooms clear across the length of my yard. Then he goes back and sits on an overhead utility wire just over the Salvia, and then back to its blooms. This goes on over and over again.

I also noticed a little fight with two sparrows, but I don't know who was doing the chasing. It hasn't used the feeder yet, but I guess he/she needs another hummer to show the way. I have attached red ribbons to it...any other suggestions?
