Hummingbird Garden

Brown Hummingbird

Hi All,

For the second time I've seen a hummingbird unlike any other I've seen, in fact the first time I saw it I thought it was a large moth. Then I saw it again tonight, feeding on some Peter Pan Agapanthus. It is very small, maybe half the size of the colorful hummingbirds, even by hummingbird standards. And it was all brown, like a large moth. I am just a person who appreciates birds and wondered if this was something unusual or rare.

I too was fooled once when I was outside before dawn and viewed this creature. Could this have been what it looked like?

Thanks for replying, I think it could well be a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth. I'm surprised that I haven't seen one before, but I'm happy to now know what it is. Both times I've seen it have been just before dusk so I'll keep my camera ready for the next few weeks and see if I can't get a photo. Thanks again, Steve.
