Do you mean to overwinter it in ground? If so you will have to provide it with quite a bit of protection and it will depend on just where it is planted. I have 3 in a raised bed on the sw side of my house that I am going to try to overwinter there. I also have two in the back yard up against a western facing fence that I will try there and one in a container that I will cut back and bring inside.

Lots of pine straw would provide protection or leaves if you don't have voles or other burrowing critters.

I was going to overwinter it in the ground with protection because it is on SW side of my yard in full sun. But now it has tipped over somewhat and some roots are out of the ground. It is still loaded with flowers and I haven't deadheaded it recently because it is covered with mean (LOL) bees. I guess if I can get near the root ball without getting stung I should try to press it back in the ground.

Just pile some soil on it, and whatever you do, don't headhead it until April.

I agree with ward just cover up the roots with more soil.

I've had it overwinter a zone colder in heavier soil. But not every year.

thanks all!!! I will cover it with some soil and let it be. Birdgardner, that is encouraging news for me. I have somewhat heavy soil here too, but I did add some compost when I planted. Penny, no voles or burrowing critters here (as far as I know, LOL), I will heap tons of pin oak leaves on it for the winter.
