A long lost Hydrangea. (?)

I'm hoping that someone might be able to tell me the name of a hydrangea that used to grow in my zone (5a Central PA.)

About 20 years ago (when picking up a girl that I used to date) I used to drive by a house that had the most amazing blue Hydrangeas. I wasn't interested in gardening at the time yet they still caught my eye. The blooms were bright blue and huge with the whole bush being totally filled. You couldn't miss them.

I've always remembered those Hydrangeas. I've tried to replicate them by growing Nikko Blues with limited success - They always freeze out even when I cover them.

The amazing Hydrangeas that caught my eye is gone now...I know this because I ended up getting married to the girl who lived in that house even though I didn't know her then. The house was sold and the Hydrangeas were replaced with something else. Those Hydrangeas were never covered during the winter...actually they were totally neglected. Nothing was ever done to them. They were growing there when my wife's family bought the house and stayed behind when they moved. I wish that I had cut a few cuttings beforehand.

Does anyone have an idea as to what they might have been?

Thanks in advance for any replies!
