They can come to my house, I have 5 feeders out. Better yet, they can just stay over the winter right here :-)

As bad as it is along the coast, and as widespread as the hurricane damage was, not every garden was devastated. I just received an email acct. from Nancy Newfield who lives in Metarie, La. on the west side of N.O. and many of her plants came through unscathed. Her part of New Orleans was spared much of the devastation as it is on higher ground. Also there are pockets in and around Biloxi that only had minor damage.

Nancy in fact just drove down from Baton Rouge to water plants, refill feeders and check on her home. Yes there may not be an abundance of feeders but our little ones have survived since the dawn of time without our help and I think they will be fine. With all that said I worry about them too.

I worry about them migrating under normal circumstances! Hopefully God will keep all our little hummingbirds safe and guide them safely to where they need to go. Maybe many of them will stay where the food is! :)

That's wonderful news!!! Glad to know that Nancy is safe and her home is too.

I do worry about all the pets that were left behind as well. There's been some reporting on the news now and I constantly feel that I'd like to know more. I want so desperately to go there and scoop them all up.

Please visit our sister forum at That Home site. There are several threads about helping animals and even signing a petition to allow the evacuees to take their pets with them. Supposedly the word has come down that everyone has to get out but can't take their pets.

I heard that the Humane Society has set up shelters for animals in areas hit by the hurricane, so that is where I will send my donation when I get paid - SOOOOO broke!!! I usually send a bag of cat food and one of dog food to areas after a disaster, but this one is so uncoordinated that I am opting for cash this time.

There are now several animal relief organizations on the coast that are coordinationg their efforts with Purina and other pet food companies.

I will also tell you that I also finally was able to get intouch with a very very dear friend down their in Biloxi. Yesterday when I spoke with her she said that the hummies were there in force and she was putting up extra feeders and filling them as fast as they are emptying them. So for everyone along the gulf coast and a bit inland our babies are there or will be soon ...be prepared!
