I'd love to know that too! I've posted about the aggressively territorial hummers in my yard--I now have a feeder in the front and the back yards, and both are closely watched by individual female hummers. I can't differentiate the individuals, so they may swap out with other birds--maybe whoever gets there first in the morning or season? I agree with bob Bob that maybe a migrating male moved in--are you certain it's the same female back again?
Along those lines--last night a mockingbird got too close to the female rubythroats perch in the crepe myrtle--she zoomed him until he flew down and landed on the ground. To make her point heard, she zoomed down and thwacked the mocker(audibly) on his back! Resumed her perch while the mocker looked confused. I hated to laugh--but it was funny.
