The hummingbird activity is really picking up here in South Alabama. I saw my first hummer in May and it fed sporadically at the feeder and since July 8 the numbers have steadily increased. For the last couple of weeks I have had anywhere between 6 and 10 eating at 6 feeders all day. I left my feeders up during Katrina and the hummingbirds fed all during the hurricane. It was interesting to watch and they provided non-stop entertainment during 5 days without electricity. With a lot of natural vegetation destroyed during Katrina, many hummingbird lovers have regularly been calling into our local newspapers Soundoff column encouraging people to fill up their feeders and discussing larger than normal numbers feeding.
