They most likely are late hatches and need to bulk up a little more before they leave. I had one last year that stayed until the middle of Oct.

I had some stay around for 3 days in Southern Ontario and was worried they wouldn't go. We were having lows of 5 deg. celsius at night.
Like penny, I also think they needed to bulk up. I also think they might be waiting for a good tailwind. Once the winds changed direction they seemed to be gone.

gdgroves, Im down here just north of Muskegon (a troll LOL)My hummers seem to have left just before last weekend and our first area frost. I still have my feeders up so if your little ones happen by this way they will get a good meal on the road!

I hope your hummers do leave soon , would hate to hear something happened to them as did in my most recent thread today. My sis and I have certainly had our share of death . Three close family and sis had two dogs ,all just this year. Good luck with the hummers--steve

I live near Detroit,Mi. and last year there was one here until mid November. I kept the feeder out for her plus had impatients but we had warm weather right up until she left. This year there weren't as many as last and I wondered if the hurricane had anything to do with it.

Usually if you have late stagglers they are either late season hatches that have not put on the necessary weight to start the migration or they are older or ill hummers that know instictively that they can't make the trip. Right now I have a juvenile that showed up here on Oct. 16th after our snow storm on the 12th. I have 3 different style feeders up for him but he obviously hasn't learned to use a feeder as he will only use the flowers of my surviving salvias and cannas. He is bulking up so I hope he will be able to continue on his maiden voyage to a warmer climate. I have posted pictures in a previous thread titled New Baby Showed Up 10/12/06
