Milo that is a spectacular looking Impatiens! I don't believ that I have seen one quite like it. Mr. Impatiens may be able to identify it for you. If you don't get a reply soon you can try posting in the Impatiens group.

I am curious about your plant. Have you tried to propagate it? Has it ever produced seed?

Well I can tell you it is not omeiana but it more than likly closely allied to it. I dont know which species it is. I of course would LOVE a cutting of it. Where are you from? Are you in the US? What nursery did you get it from? China has a whole bunch of hardy Impatiens. I know of a botanist in Europe who may be able to ID it for you. I dont believe it is the same as the Heronswood sp either that one isnt as pretty as this one. This one is REAL pretty. Did you get any other kind of local for it? Like Mt. emei shan. I dont think it will produced seed without another of the same species. None of my hardy Impatiens will produce seed by themselves. They appear to be self sterile. So I wouldnt worry about it excaping. BOY that sure is a purrty impatiens. I am jealous.

Calla Lady: Thanks:-) No seeds unfortunately, but it is easily propagated by division in the fall or by cuttings.

MrImpatiens: Thanks! I'd be happy to trade, but I'm unfortunately in Europe, and I don't think I'm able to get a phytosanitary certificate. I bought the plant from Kaichen Nursery in China a few years back, as I. omeiana. I didn't get a locality, but if I had to guess it would be Sichuan. I'd love to have it identified, do you think you could mail the botanist and ask him?

Where in Europe are you. You can send cutting to Ray Morgan in Wales, he is the King of Impatiens. Ray is the national collection holder of Impatiens in England. I know he would be happy to recieve cuttings from you and I dont think you would have to worry about the phyto either. I sent your photo the the botanist and I am still waiting to hear back. I will let you know what he says. I have seen the Kaichen list before and have thought about ordering it but I already have omeiana now Im kicking myself for not doing so. Email privatly about Rays email. I would like to add your pic to my photo gallery as well. I would also like your full name to give you credit for the pic. You can do this privatly as well.

"Well, it seems to me Impatiens imbecilla, but normally this species is reddish or at least with some red lines."
I didnt send him a side view but this appears to be it.
Your plant appears to have reddish lines. Now how about some cuttings? :)

OK correction I sent a side view of the flower to Dr Yuan and this is what he had to say.
"It should be I. oxyanthera, not imbecilla. Very often it has tuberose roots, isn't it?"
I do believe that you said it was tuberous, right?
