pinch and poke method

I've tried impatiens in the past and never had success with them. They all end up scraggly looking. I've read about the pinch and poke and would like to know more. Exactly where do you pinch? On the stem, flower etc. I'm assuming the poke just means to poke what you pinch back into the soil. If I'm wrong, please let me know. I also read somewhere to just come them (stems along with the flowers)off completely when you first get them to promote bushiness.

Any recommendations on how to keep them from looking scraggly. I have in the past, just pinched the flowers, but that didn't seem to work. Thanks in advance.
