I would not put a plant there. The floor space is too valuable.

I do not know what you have on the wall on the other side of the fireplace. Do you have a painting there? Do the spaces on each side of the fireplace seem to need "balancing?" One thing to take into consideration is the sun coming in the sliding glass door and fading artwork on your newly uncovered wall space.

I have an 8 x 10in. framed photo of my kids at a lake on the other side of the fireplace and next to that is a built in TV cabinet/bookcase. On the side wall I have a 3 x 5 ft. landscape canvas painting. You are right about the sun fading artwork...thank you for your comments.

A nice eye-catching painting would be transform the corner and make it interesting. Good luck:)

I'd like to see more of the room and the walls before offering advice. Judging by what I can see, I think a collection of small silver toned framed mirrors to reflect the light and outside view.

I think multiple different sized photographs of family, or place around the world, maybe even framed quotes, would look fantastic!

A nice fabric wall hanging, or tapestry would add some interest to that area without taking any floor space or blocking any light. I would keep the fabric in the light tones to avoid it being faded. [houzz=] [houzz=]

I reccomend painting the outlet covers to match the wall. The white is very prominent. Then add some height with art, or a floor sculpture. Something tall and narrow could be a great accent. In lieu of a sculpture which could be hard to find, an arrangement of branches or grasses would work to draw the eye up.
