Have you scratch tested the sticks? If you scratch a stick with your fingernail and it's green in there, your plant is alive.

I have a nikko that's doing exactly what your bad one is doing. It's been through much worse in the past, so I don't suspect it's dead. When they get bit by frost, they sulk for a while. You never know. It could bounce back eventually, and usually only when we stop watching. =)

I had not heard of the scratch test, thanks, I'll check that out. All new growth has been coming from the ground though, no new leaves from any of the branches/wood though.

I'm assuming now would be a bad time to fertilize them too huh? Maybe not until they're growing good? Should I use compost instead of miracle grow? Thanks.

If the stems are dead, do not despair. The root system below ground may be ok and may eventually generate new growth from the crown. It will be a matter of time. Wait a month or so. Maintain your watering to keep the soil moist -not wet though- and only fertilize the one that is ok. Normal time to fertilize in the southern half of the country is early May and again in June-July. Half a cup of compost, composted manure, cottonseed meal will all work but again, do not fertilize the shrubs that are stressed.
