What you are doing sounds good to me but, keep it well fed. Put it in a cool shaded spot. I have one here were I live but it never getting real big because of the heat. Once you get it to a certain size you should be able to make cuttings of it and try it in the garden. I would be very interested in hearing how well it could survive you winters.
