Pole beans grow well here. I've grown Kentucky wonder and Blue Lake varieties (there's also a bush variety on these too) with good success. I find that the pole beans while they do not set on as large a crop all at once as the bush beans they bear over a longer time period. Since I don't have a pressure canner so I don't can beans this works out just fine.

I don't grow them for dry use but they ought to do well. I'm thinking of trying limas this year much to my kid's dismay:)

I have seen pole beans in Iowa outside a 4th of July fireworks area. The owner was harvesting. The pole beans were spectacular, as were the fireworks.

I have three fence posts. Since pole beans grow taller they should produce a higher yield crop than bush beans, a plus in a small garden. So, I am trying them this year, and I am trying pole peas.

My question is, "Must pole beans be tied up, or do they have tendrils?

I grow pole beans every year in my garden. They are wonderful, no more back breaking while picking and you do not have to tie them up. They will latch on and bloom all season. Good luck and enjoy them!

One year I grew those Asparagus beans. I haven't grown them again, but it was interesting.

I like the Italian pole beans, blanched and served in scalded milk with butter.
