border plantings under a cedar wind break?

I live in central iowa and would like to plant some flowers etc under the wind break of cedar trees on the west side of my property. On the other side of the trees is a farm field that rotates corn and beans. The area gets limited late late day sun. Any ideas what would grow well in this area? Thank you!

I'd probably treat it like a shade garden, hostas, astilbe, ferns, bleeding hearts, etc... :)

I have had friends tell me that nothing will grow "under cedar trees" Is this true? Thank you for the response I think I will try some hostas etc this year.

The rule of thumb- if weeds don't grow, than nothing else will grow. I don't know about cedar trees. I'll have to check around them next time.
