hydrangea trimming

I am new to Hydrangeas, 2nd. year. Last year I planted two small Hydrangea macrophylla, Paris City Line and Pia. I thought I read some place not to cut last years growth if you want flowers. The stems from last year, about 12 inches long appear to be dry dead wood. I can see new growth coming from the crown. Do I cut back all the dried stems on these plants. Thank you for any help.
