I bought a broadfork several years back, in order to aerate the soil without breaking down the layers too much.
My experience with the broadfork has been good - I spread compost amendments, then patiently use the broadfork to uplift, with a wiggle to break the surface crust and encourage the amendments to go down into the lower layers. I even use it around perennial flowers, as long as there is a little room between them, to decompact the soil. I use it a bit more aggressively where there is a walking path that compacted the soil. I have used it in my raised beds as well.
With newer beds in our current garden - heavy clay soil - I usually till in the amendments the first year using our ancient rototiller, and then use the broadfork in subsequent ones.
