Cocoa shells as a pest repellent?

Has anyone ever heard of using cocoa shells as a deterent to keep the rabbits from eating your flowers (i.e. impatiens, corn flowers and hostas?) My sister told me about it, but with the price difference I want to see if this is just her experience or if others have had it as well.

I replaced most of my shredded cyprus mulch this year with cocoa shells. Mostly for the look. The shredded stuff always had lots of bugs in it.

I had no rabbit damage this year. But... I covered my impatiens with bird netting until about the middle of June to keep the rabbits from having them for lunch.

The mulch did a pretty good job of weed control too.

I doubt that after it looses it's chocolate scent it repells any critters. I think the only "true" rabbit repellent is the "Elmer Fudd Wabbitt Wepellent" ... a "Browning 12 guage"
