Changing water/nutrient solution

Hello everyone.
I have been browsing the forums and trying to answer my question but have not had much luck. I have two 5 gallon DWC hydroponic gardens and every week or more frequently I top off the water, adjust PH, and top up the nutrient concentration if it reads low on TDC meter. I have been reading about the frequency with which people are changing out their nutrient solution. I have found everything from once a week, every other week, once the plants have used an amount of water equal to the total reservoir size, or never. I have to say that i fall into the latter category. In the year or so that I have had my system up and running i think I have done a complete drain and fill once. I can't see letting the nutrients go to waste. I would like to know what the reason is for changing out the solution so frequently. My plants seem to be happy and healthy so I don't know if I am hurting them by not changing out the water or if it doesn't really matter. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
