Healthy Hydrangea?

I posted on this website several years ago-but lately have been just doing things trial and error. Unfortunately when it comes to hydrangeas it has been more error than my budget can take! I tend to be a visual person so could someone PLEASE post a picture of what a healthy hydrangea should look like early spring. Mine currently have several "sticks" that I am fighting the urge to prune and a few new leaves at the base. Is this what they are supposed to look like? I planted them last spring and they were big and healthy with lots of blooms. I still consider myself a newbie so any advise would be appreciated-Thanks!

Hi, thats the way they're supposed to look in Zone 5 this time of yr. I wouldn't prune it unless you know wether it blooms on new or old wood.

I purchased them end of summer at a local nursery and all of them had Endless Summer spikes in the container but they were not in Endless Summer containers and were fairly large plants. The previous spring I purchased three(2 Original and 1 Blushing Bride) Endless Summer at the local big box, I thought I had lost all three, last season they had a few leaves but never really did anything. This spring they are trying to come back after completely disappearing this winter. Thanks for any help!
