Rooting hydrangeas

Hi - I have a quick question - I'm moving to Texas in a few weeks and want to take some of my Hydrangeas with me - since it's a long haul move most of our stuff is going in a moving van and we have to transport our two Giant breed dogs plus two cats in our van so I don't have a huge amount of space in our car for pots. What I'm wondering is can I start cuttings in a ziplock bag? would this work? I have 3 weeks before we need to move so I'm wondering if I start them off now in the bag then I can transport them easier and pot them up once we get to our new house. I don't want to put any plants in the moving van since I'm not sure how hot it will get in there etc - some of my Hydrangeas came from a nursery here in CA that is now closed and I would not even know where to find them again so I'd really like to take some with me.

Thank you!!!

I have not tried that myself (keeping them in the ziplock bag while transporting a long distance) or heard of them but I wonder if they would complain if you tried. Sounds like you do not have space for pots so just try and cross your fingers. Maintain the plastic back contents humid -not wet- and cool. Then place them in small pots as soon as you get to your destination.

Just wondering, are you one of those people that Toyota announced are moving from CA to Plano, Texas?

I think you could do it. I would prepare the cuttings for sticking and put them in a zip lock plastic bag with some peat moss, the kind used for mossing the tops of pots, soak the moss and then squeeze out all the water you can. If your trip is a long one, open the bag every day or two for a few minutes to get some oxygen into it. If you have a cooler for drinks, put the bag into it. Al

Thank you everyone!!! Al I'll definitely try the peat moss thing. I've never tried rooting before but really want to have some of my hydrangeas with me. I'm sad enough I can't take any of my roses because of the Rose Rosette disease that is going crazy out that way!!

Luis - no we are not but I guess that is why I had so much stiff competition buying a house - it was crazy!!! My family lives out that way and I've been wanting to move for ever and finally convinced my husband :)
