It is possible you are looking at the Asian beetle if you are having huge swarms of them trying to get into your house though during certain times of year even the ladybugs might do that to some extent.

I've been seeing a fair number of lady bugs around here but that shouldn't suprise me since there is plenty of food for them and I did release some this past spring.

There are no swarms trying to get in anywhere, just what seem to be more of them than usual around (outside). And ladybugs are pretty distinctive - nothing like Asian beetles.

Lucy, tclynx is talking about the Asian lady beetle, which is one of the many types of ladybugs. Until you learn to identify them by the distinctive markings on their pronotum, Asian lady beetles really can't be separated from most other kinds. Especially since this particular beetles comes in several color and pattern variations!

The beetles swarm this time of year, often entering buildings where they are not as appreciated as they are out in the garden.

There are some 450 different Lady Bugs, Lady Beetles, ranging from the Asian Lady Beetle to the Mexican Bean Beetle to the Squash Beetle. They are all around us even if we do not see them, quietly doing their work. If your garden does not offer enough food they will move out into the wild flower fields, but when a food source in your garden becomes abundant they will move back, unless you spray some poison around that kills off that food source.
