Step on them. Nicely. Or as some others have suggested, you could put a rock on the tuber to hold it down. When the ground freezes again, cover them with something; leaves, pine boughs, straw. This will insulate the cold IN.

Thanks...I would step on them but the ground is frozen now! The overnight temps are forcasted to drop down to the teens and even 0 by this weekend with highs barely 24. It has finally snowed again...do you think this blanket will provide enough protection until I step on them?

Well it's April 01 now, and somehow during March the rhizomes found a way to sink themselves back how planted them! Anyhoo, they are sporting new growth and all is doing well :)

I have frost heave issues, too, but I just noticed them now. The iris leaves are already growing. What's the best thing for me to do with the rhizomes at this point? I was thinking of just making a little hill of soil over all those that popped up above the surface.

I cover my recently planted ones with a thin layer of pine straw to help keep them from popping up out of the soil over the winter. In the Spring when the foliage is up, I brush the pine straw away from the rhizomes.

I use short lengths of bamboo, pushed into the ground diagonally across the rhizome, 2-3 per rhizome, to pin it firmly to the ground when I plant it. That works well for me.
