What sort of camera are you using? With an instant, digital or film, you're probably not going to have much luck. SLR, slow your shutter speed down and use a film meant for low-light conditions (Your camera shop can help you select a film that will be best suited to the purpose). Either way, make sure any autoflash is turned off.

I'm using a digital camera, but it's not the most sophisticated one on the market. Nearly every pro out there is using digital now, so I don't think that's an insurmountable problem. Any other comments?

Use a tripod and the "auto shutter timer" that way the movement from your finger snappng the picture will be minimized. Take the same picture over and over on "auto" adjusting the ISO, if you can, 'til you get what you want. It might be best to face east, to capture what remaining sunlight there is. There are many variables. Choose one to vary, make notes, and take lots of pictures.

What do you mean by "I haven't had much luck"? how do your pictures turn out? This is experimental or artistic photography that you are attempting and it may be worth understanding the basics first.
