I believe that it refers to the adaptation of the shoji style to modern architecture. On the Mainland, it is Cali that is at the forefront of use of Japanese-inspired architectural details, such as the shoji screens and doors, as well as taking that style and applying it to windows, walls, skylights, and so forth.

While I live far from Cali these days, this happens to be the style I'm incorporating in my own remodel of my bathroom and bedroom.
