Oridono Nishiki turned green all over

I planted a beautifully TOTALLY variegated 2-yr. old Oridono Nishiki last fall in ordinary clay dirt amended with some bagged pine bark "fines" soil conditioner (1/3 part) and some white granules (lava rock? I forget) that were recommended for drainage - NO FERILIZER.

This spring it appeared to be leafing out totally green; then 3 days of hard frosts killed most of its leaves. The new leaves are all also completely green! Can a tree revert COMPLETELY that quickly???? The branches are still dark pink.
