Sickly hydrangea

My hydrangea looked good at the beginning of the season but has taken a turn. I wanted a blue hydrangea so in the early spring I added some "soil acidifier", carefully following the instructions on the bag. I also dropped some iron bars under the plant. It started turning a few weeks ago and now appears to be dying. Too much acid? It's been an extremely wet summer and recently an extreme extended heat wave here in NYC. Any suggestions.
