The ground is probably still quite hard there. Just put them in a cool place & hold them til the ground can be dug. No need to try to pot them & don't try to keep them damp, more problem with rot than drying out. They can be out of the soil quite a while with no problems. You can plant them before last frosts if you want, they can handle quite a bit of chill.
This is all assuming they are bearded iris. Other types would be handled differently.
