Iris division

I bought a container of iris and wanted to stretch my dollar by dividing it. Could not do it by hands - the roots were really bound together. Is it save to cut with knife on 4 portions? Will it bloom this season if I divide it or I better wait till fall? I know almost nothing about irises, though LOVE the foliage, blooms and look of them.

If you want blooms this season, you'd be better off waiting until later in the year to divide it. Disturbing the roots now would probably abort spring bloom.

What type of irises are they?

It was Blue Flag. I bought 2 more today. I think I am getting addicted to irises. Great! Roses, hostas, and now this! I need therapy :-). Is there a cure?
